Frequently Asked Questions
Can smoke detectors detect vaping?
Smoke detection is designed to detect particles in the air that are indicative of a fire. When tobacco products are burned, they release a combination of particles and chemicals into the air.
With e-cigarette use, a nicotine-based liquid vaporizes and produces an aerosolized mixture of particles that do not contain combustion products. In most cases, vapor from a device like this will not set off a smoke alarm.
If students blow directly into smoke detectors, they may be able to set them off. But since they are primarily designed to detect fires, school administrators may think these are false positives by the time they investigate.
Verkada Air Quality Sensors are designed to detect these chemical changes and alert school administrators right away. If you want to combat vaping in schools, you need a system designed for vape detection specifically.
Can the Verkada system be used to detect other things besides vaping?
The Verkada system can be used for a variety of applications in schools and commercial buildings, including:
Air Quality and Safety
Temperature
Humidity
Noise Detection
Motion Sensing
How else can Verkada support school safety?
Vape detection is not the only way that the Verkada platform can help schools. Our vape detector can also use motion and noise detection to monitor for fights, bullying, and other suspicious activity. Our cameras can be used for perimeter security and to deter crime. In the event of an incident, footage can be used for investigations.
Since Verkada Air Quality Sensors detects many different changes in the school environment, it can also identify when students are smoking tobacco products or marijuana.
Verkada vape detectors can also monitor air quality for other VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that may be indicative of a gas leak or chemical spill. And they can also monitor temperature and humidity to ensure that classrooms and other areas are safe and comfortable for students and staff.
Where do students usually vape?
Students typically use e-cigarettes and vapes in bathrooms, locker rooms, and hallways. These are areas where they can easily hide their vaping devices and where there is less chance of getting caught.
However, indoor spaces like classrooms may also be popular vaping spots. In some cases, students will even vape in the middle of class.
Can students avoid getting caught vaping, even with the Verkada system?
Although Verkada vape detectors can detect vaping in real-time, students may still be able to avoid them. There is no surefire way to prevent students from vaping, but installing the Verkada Air Quality Sensor in middle schools and high schools is a proactive measure that will benefit students' overall health and safety.
How does Verkada’s Air Quality Sensor compare to other vape detectors?
Unlike Halo, Zeptive and other standalone vape detectors, Verkada’s vape detection solution comes natively integrated with the rest of the Verkada physical security solution, allowing for integrated insights, better vape detection and safer schools.
